Before you drive alone you'll pass a four-part examination: vision, a sign and signal test, a rules-of-the-road test and a road test. Knowing the waiting periods and what to bring on test day avoids a wasted trip.

Know the rule

The temporary instruction (learner's) permit is issued after you pass the eye screening and knowledge exams and pay the fee. It's valid for twelve months, and you must pass all exams within that time.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

While learning, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is qualified to drive that class of vehicle and at least 21 years old.

Handbook p. 29 ↗
10 days

Minimum wait after your permit is issued (after passing the knowledge exam) before a Class D road exam

Handbook p. 29 ↗

The driver examination has four parts:

  • Vision screening
  • Highway sign and signal test—identify signs by shape, color and symbol, and explain signals and markings
  • Rules of the road test—laws and safe driving practices
  • Road test
Handbook p. 39 ↗
Sign shapes: octagon, triangle, pentagon
Shapes you may be asked to identify: stop, yield and school

Know the rule

Minimum vision for a Delaware license is 20/40, with or without glasses or contacts. Vision between 20/40 and 20/50 may allow daylight-only driving.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

Know the rule

If your Class D privileges were cancelled, denied, disqualified, expired, revoked or suspended for over one year, you must retake the vision and Class D knowledge exams. After more than 5 years, you must also retake the road exam.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

Know the rule

Road exams are given every weekday except Wednesday. Schedule online with My Road Test or by calling a DMV office.

Handbook p. 40 ↗

Bring to the road exam:

  • Your valid learner's permit
  • The valid license of your accompanying driver, at least 21 (not needed for a motorcycle skills exam)
  • Valid registration card for the vehicle (and trailer, if any)
  • Valid insurance card for the vehicle (original or electronic)
Handbook p. 41 ↗

On the roughly 30-minute road test you will show:

  • Parallel parking and a three-point turn
  • Right and left turns, lane changes and merging with traffic
  • Backing 50 feet
  • Right-of-way rules and maintaining proper speed
  • Following and overtaking vehicles, and entering intersections
  • Responding to road signs, traffic signals and pavement markings
  • A vehicle safety inspection and knowledge of the vehicle controls
Handbook p. 41 ↗

Know the rule

You provide the test vehicle: properly registered, insured, within your license class, and able to pass the examiner's safety inspection. No smoking, cell phone use or music during the test.

Handbook p. 41 ↗

Know the rule

A licensed driver must stay on site to drive the vehicle away if you don't pass. If you fail, you must wait at least ten days before testing again.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Put it into practice

You pass your knowledge test on a Monday and receive your permit. The earliest your road test can be is 10 days later—and never on a Wednesday. On test day bring your permit, your 21-or-older companion's license, and the car's registration and insurance card.
