Work zones put people on foot a few feet from moving traffic. In Arkansas, work zone crashes rose by more than 70% from 2018 to 2021, and many of the people hurt are drivers, not workers. Slow down, put the phone away, and move over.

Know the rule

Speed limits in work zones may be reduced and lanes restricted. Any reduced speed will be clearly posted; if no reduced limit is posted, obey the normal posted speed limit.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Standard work zone

A construction site that may stay in one location for months or years.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Mobile work zone

Work done for a short time in one place, often moving slowly with stops, such as painting stripes, removing debris or patching potholes.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

Flashing green lights on construction and maintenance vehicles (used with yellow or white lights) mean an active work zone, standard or mobile. Use caution and slow down.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Know the rule

Work zone signs may be diamond or rectangular, with an orange, white or black background and white or black letters or symbols. They warn of reduced speed, detours, slow equipment and poor or changing road surfaces.

Flagger

A person who controls traffic through a work area using a sign or flag.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Know the rule

Up to $5,000

How high a doubled work zone fine can go, depending on the violation

Handbook p. 31 ↗

Know the rule

Holding your phone to call, text, look up directions or scroll social media is a moving violation. If you can't use a hands-free connection, don't use your phone.

Handbook p. 31 ↗

Know the rule

When you see signs that you're entering a work zone, begin to slow down, and keep the reduced speed until you see a posted speed limit sign. Speed cameras are used in Interstate work zones so officers can stop violators at the exit.

Fines doubled in work zone
When workers are present, speeding fines doubled

Put it into practice

You're on I-30 and pass a sign saying WORK ZONE, then a 45 mph sign. Slow to 45 and keep it there, phone down, until you pass a posted speed limit sign after the work area. A speeding ticket here costs double.
