Regulatory & warning signs
A 3-minute lesson from the Arkansas course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Signs show traffic rules, hazards, locations, directions and services. The shape and color tell you what kind of message a sign carries, often before you can read the words.
Stop sign
Know the rule
A stop sign is red with white letters and has 8 sides (octagon). Come to a complete stop and wait until crossing vehicles and pedestrians have cleared the intersection.
A yield sign is a red-and-white or yellow-and-black triangle reading "YIELD" or "YIELD RIGHT OF WAY." Slow down, yield to traffic in the intersection you're entering or crossing, and stop when necessary.
A speed limit sign shows the maximum and minimum speed for that section of road. The maximum is for ideal conditions; slow down on slippery roads or in poor visibility.
Warning signs are yellow with black letters or symbols, and most are diamond-shaped. They tell you to slow down and be ready to stop, or warn of a hazard or special situation ahead.
Regulation signs are white squares or rectangles with black and/or red letters or symbols, covering direction, lane use, turning and parking. A red circle with a red slash means that move is prohibited, such as no U-turn.
You're on a rural county road with no speed limit posted. The limit is 40 mph. Driving 56 mph would be more than 15 mph over, which is a Class C misdemeanor.
