Traffic controls include signals, signs and pavement markings, plus people such as police, highway workers and school crossing guards. You must obey every one. Signal lights tell you when to stop, where to stop and when to go.
Red, yellow and green signal lights Know the rule
If you're already stopped at the intersection or stop line when the light is yellow, you may not proceed.
Handbook p. 35 ↗ Know the rule
On a green light, let opposing traffic already in the intersection clear before you go.
Handbook p. 35 ↗ Know the rule
A flashing red light is the same as a stop sign: come to a complete stop, then go only when safe.
Handbook p. 36 ↗ Know the rule
At a flashing yellow light, slow down and proceed with caution.
Handbook p. 36 ↗ Flashing yellow arrow: turn permitted, but yield Know the rule
In a turn lane with its own arrow, make your turn after the green arrow appears and it's safe.
Handbook p. 36 ↗ Know the rule
Right on red: come to a complete stop, check for opposing traffic and pedestrians, then turn, unless a sign prohibits turning right on red.
Handbook p. 37 ↗ Know the rule
Never block or stop your vehicle within a crosswalk.
Handbook p. 37 ↗ NO RIGHT TURN ON RED Put it into practice
You're first in the left-turn lane and the arrow is flashing yellow. You may turn left, but oncoming cars and pedestrians still have the right-of-way. Wait for a safe gap, then turn with caution.
A useful reminder Flashing yellow ARROW = you may turn but must yield. Steady green ARROW = protected, oncoming traffic is stopped.
Check your understanding Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
