A graduated license (Class G) is Arizona's teen license. For the first 6 months it carries two limits — a midnight curfew and a passenger limit — because new teen drivers are most at risk at night and with friends in the car.

Know the rule

A graduated license is issued to applicants at least 16 but less than 18 years old. It is valid for any vehicle that does not require a motorcycle or commercial license.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

To get a graduated license you must:

  • Have held an Arizona instruction permit for at least 6 months
  • Hold a permit that is still valid when you apply
  • Complete an MVD-approved Arizona driver education program, OR
  • Have a parent/guardian certify in writing the supervised practice hours below

Curfew hours for the first 6 months of a graduated license

Handbook p. 12 ↗

The curfew does not apply when:

  • A parent or legal guardian with a valid Class A, B, C or D license sits in the front passenger seat
  • Driving directly to or from a sanctioned school-sponsored activity
  • Driving directly to or from your place of employment
  • Driving directly to or from a sanctioned religious activity
  • Driving directly to or from a family emergency
Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

For the first 6 months you may not carry more than one passenger under age 18, unless the passengers are your siblings or a parent/legal guardian with a valid Class A, B, C or D license sits in the front passenger seat.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Violating curfew or passenger limits brings fines and a mandatory extension of the 6-month restricted period. A third curfew and/or passenger conviction brings a suspension.

Handbook p. 13 ↗

Know the rule

You are not required to get an operator (Class D) license at age 18, but you may choose to.

Handbook p. 13 ↗

Put it into practice

You're 16, licensed for 3 months, and want to drive two friends (both 17) home from a movie at 10 p.m. The time is fine, but the passenger limit is not: only one passenger under 18 is allowed unless they're your siblings or a parent/guardian sits up front.
