If you're involved in a crash, the law requires you to stop, help, and report. What you do in the first minutes protects the injured, prevents a second crash, and gives police and insurers the facts they need.

Know the rule

You must stop if you are in any way involved in a traffic crash.

Handbook p. 50 ↗

If you're involved in a crash, you must:

  • Stop at or near the scene and stay until police arrive and question everyone involved
  • Give aid to injured persons and send for an ambulance
  • Warn passing traffic, or have someone warn approaching drivers, to prevent further damage
  • Get the names and addresses of all witnesses and everyone involved
  • Record the other driver's details (see below)
  • Contact the police if there is an injury, a death, or property damage of $1,000 or more
Handbook p. 67 ↗

Know the rule

DO NOT MOVE AN INJURED PERSON unless there is danger of another crash.

Handbook p. 67 ↗
$1,000

Property damage that requires you to contact police

Handbook p. 67 ↗

Record about the other driver and vehicle:

  • Driver's name and address
  • Driver license number
  • Insurance company name
  • Make, model and year of the vehicle
  • Damage to the vehicle
  • License plate number
Handbook p. 67 ↗

Know the rule

The law requires you to give police information about the crash at the time of the crash. Police file an accident report with WYDOT's Accident Records Section.

Handbook p. 67 ↗

If you damage an unattended vehicle or property and can't find the owner, leave a note with:

  • Your name, address and telephone number
  • Your driver license number
  • Your license plate number
  • The date and time of the crash
  • The damage to the vehicle
Handbook p. 67 ↗

Know the rule

After leaving the note, you must also contact the nearest law enforcement agency.

Handbook p. 67 ↗

Put it into practice

Backing out of a grocery store space, you dent a parked car and can't find its owner. Leave a note with your name, address, phone number, license and plate numbers, the date and time, and the damage. Then call the nearest law enforcement agency.
