Drivers under 21 face a much lower alcohol limit than adults. After certain DWUIs, anyone may have to drive with an ignition interlock, a breath-testing device you pay for, before getting any other license.

Know the rule

If you're under 21 and in actual physical control of a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of 0.02 percent or more, you'll be suspended for DWUI.

Handbook p. 22 ↗

Know the rule

You may be eligible for limited privileges if you haven't been issued a probationary license in the past five years and have no ignition interlock requirement.

Handbook p. 22 ↗

Ignition interlock device

A device installed at your own expense after certain DWUI convictions. You must hold an interlock-restricted (IIR) license for the full period before any other license.

Handbook p. 28 ↗

Interlock periods:

  • 6 months: 1st DWUI (conviction or deferred prosecution) with a BAC of .15% or greater
  • 1 year: 2nd DWUI when alcohol is involved
  • 2 years: 3rd DWUI with alcohol; also required for the 3-year revocation to drive legally
  • Lifetime: 4th or later DWUI with alcohol; may petition for removal 5 years after conviction
Handbook p. 28 ↗

To get the IIR license you must:

  • File an SR-22 insurance form
  • Pay the $50 reinstatement fee and the $100 ignition interlock fee
  • Have a department-certified technician install the device on any vehicle you drive
  • Bring the lease agreement/installation certificate to your driver exam office
  • Take and pass any tests required for licensing

$100

Ignition interlock fee (on top of the $50 reinstatement fee)

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

You can't get the IIR license if your privilege is suspended, revoked or canceled anywhere for any reason other than the DWUI that caused the interlock requirement.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

If a court orders you into the 24/7 Sobriety Program instead of an interlock, you may apply for a 24/7 restricted driver license.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Put it into practice

You're 19 and stopped with a BAC of 0.03. That's over the 0.02 limit for drivers under 21, so you get a first Youthful Driver Suspension of 90 days.
