Moving, Address Changes & Registration

Whether you're new to Virginia or just moving across town, DMV deadlines apply. Your license comes by mail, so DMV must have your correct address, and new residents have a short window to switch their license, title and plates.
Know the rule
Your new license is mailed to you; for security, DMV does not issue licenses in customer service centers.
You move to Virginia from Ohio on June 1. You have until about July 1 (30 days) to title and register your car and get Virginia plates, and until about July 31 (60 days) to get a Virginia driver's license.
