Rhode Island driving lesson · Getting Your License
Driving on a Limited Learner Permit
A 3-minute lesson from the Rhode Island course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
A Limited Learner Permit lets you practice driving—but never alone. A qualified supervising driver must sit beside you every minute the car moves, ready to take over. Use this time to practice in different conditions and on a variety of roadways.
Supervising driver
A properly licensed driver who has held a license for at least 5 years and is 21 or older.
The permit is valid until you turn 18. It can be renewed a maximum of 2 times, and once it has been expired for more than two years it can no longer be renewed.
You have your permit and want to drive your friend home. Your 45-year-old uncle, licensed for 20 years, rides in the front passenger seat; your friend sits in back, and everyone buckles up. If your uncle were only 20, he could not supervise you.
