More collisions and injuries happen at intersections than anywhere else. Know who goes first, cross at a steady speed, and never block the intersection. Near school and church buses, be ready to stop, because children may be crossing.

Know the rule

At four-way stops and at intersections without stop signs or signals, the vehicle that entered the intersection first has the right-of-way.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

When two vehicles approach at the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

Always slow down, look both ways, and look left again before you enter an intersection. Slow down before you enter, then increase speed until you've cleared it. Do NOT slow down while turning or crossing.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Know the rule

If your view of the side street is blocked, slow down so you can stop if a car is coming.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Know the rule

If traffic is stopped and blocking an intersection, stop before reaching the crosswalk and wait for the traffic to move.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Know the rule

If you approach a school or church bus with flashing red lights and/or a red "STOP" sign showing, children are getting on or off and you must stop.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Stay stopped until:

  • The bus has started moving, OR
  • The driver motions for you to proceed, OR
  • The red flashing lights go off and/or the stop sign is pulled back
Handbook p. 30 ↗

You DON'T have to stop for a school bus when:

  • The bus is on a different roadway
  • It's in a loading zone by a controlled-access highway where pedestrians may not cross
  • You are approaching from the other direction on a divided highway
Handbook p. 30 ↗
Both directions must stop at a 4-way stop
On an undivided road, traffic in both directions must stop for a school bus

Mandatory license revocation for failing to stop for a school bus with red loading/unloading lights flashing

Handbook p. 30 ↗
4 points

Assessed for failing to stop or remain stopped for a school bus loading or unloading

Handbook p. 71 ↗

Put it into practice

On a two-lane road, a school bus stopped in the opposite lane turns on its red lights. Both directions must stop: stop and stay stopped until the bus moves, the driver waves you on, or the lights go off.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

Two cars reach an uncontrolled intersection at the same time. Who must yield?
  1. The driver on the right yields to the driver on the left
  2. The driver on the left yields to the driver on the right
  3. The larger vehicle has the right-of-way
  4. The driver going straight has the right-of-way

Answer: The driver on the left yields to the driver on the right

When two vehicles arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

Handbook p. 29 ↗
What is the mandatory license revocation for failing to stop for a school bus with red loading lights flashing?
  1. 30 days
  2. 6 months
  3. 1 year
  4. 5 years

Answer: 1 year

It's mandatory revocation for one year for failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red loading lights.

Handbook p. 30 ↗
On a two-lane, undivided road, traffic approaching from the opposite direction is never required to stop for a school bus.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False

That exception applies to divided highways; on an ordinary two-lane road, both directions must stop.

Handbook p. 30 ↗
Traffic ahead is stopped and blocking the intersection you're approaching. What should you do?
  1. Enter the intersection anyway to keep traffic flowing
  2. Stop before the crosswalk and wait
  3. Stop inside the crosswalk and wait
  4. Go around it using the shoulder

Answer: Stop before the crosswalk and wait

If traffic is blocking the intersection, stop before the crosswalk and wait rather than blocking it yourself.

Handbook p. 30 ↗
What should you do with your speed as you cross an intersection, after slowing down beforehand?
  1. Continue slowing down the entire time you're crossing
  2. Stop in the middle to check for cross traffic
  3. Increase speed until you've cleared it
  4. Match the speed of the car ahead exactly

Answer: Increase speed until you've cleared it

Slow down before entering, then increase speed to clear the intersection quickly — don't slow down while crossing.

Handbook p. 30 ↗
You don't have to stop for a school bus that's stopped in a loading zone on a controlled-access highway where pedestrians can't cross.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

This is one of the listed exceptions to the school bus stop law.
