A 2-minute lesson from the North Carolina course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
To ride a motorcycle on public roads you need either a motorcycle learner permit or a license with a motorcycle endorsement. The permit is a limited, temporary step, and riders under 18 face extra requirements.
Know the rule
To operate a motorcycle on public roads you must have a regular or commercial license with a motorcycle endorsement, or a motorcycle learner permit.
Applicants under 18 must complete the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course or the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program Basic Rider Course.
Each driver license test must be passed separately. Motorcycle permit and endorsement applicants study the Motorcycle Handbook; CDL applicants study the CDL Handbook.
A 17-year-old with a full provisional license wants to ride to school with a friend on the back. First she needs a parent's signature and a Basic Rider Course to get the permit, and even then the permit allows no passengers.
