A moped is a motorized bicycle, and you need a driver license to ride one on public streets. Bicycles and mopeds don't need registration or inspection, but Missouri requires working brakes plus lights and reflectors at night. Electric bicycles are their own category.

Motorized bicycle (moped)

Two- or three-wheeled device with automatic transmission and a motor of no more than 50 cc producing under 3 gross brake horsepower, with a top speed of no more than 30 mph on level ground.

Handbook p. 34 ↗

Handbook p. 35 ↗

From ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise, bicycles need:

  • A white front light (on the bike or carried) visible from 500 feet
  • A rear red reflector of at least 2 square inches, or a red light, visible in low beams at 600 feet
  • Reflectors or lights on pedals, crank arms, shoes or lower legs, visible in low beams at 200 feet

Electric bicycle classes
ClassMotor helpsAssistance stops at

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Put it into practice

Your moped has a 49 cc engine and automatic transmission and tops out at 28 mph. It's a motorized bicycle, so you need a valid driver license to ride it, and you may never ride it on an interstate.
