A 3-minute lesson from the Mississippi course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Besides your license, your vehicle needs its own paperwork: a Mississippi license plate, a certificate of title and adequate insurance. Windows with after-market tint need an inspection certificate and decal.
Know the rule
You must have your valid driver's license while driving.
Buy your license plate (tag) in the county where you live; contact your local Tax Collector. For heavy-truck tags, contact the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
Mount your Mississippi plate on the rear of your vehicle. Trailer hitches, tag emblems or other decorations must not hide any part of any letter or numeral on the plate.
Every vehicle must have a Certificate of Title. New and used car dealers furnish title applications, which must be supported by a bill of sale and two years' tag receipts.
Licensed motor vehicle dealers and county tax collectors must be qualified to accept title applications. Banks, finance companies and other financial institutions may also qualify as designated agents.
Any Mississippi-registered vehicle with after-market window tint film must have its windows inspected at an official Mississippi Window Tint Inspection Station and carry a tint inspection certificate and decal.
You move to Jackson with a car titled in Tennessee. Within 30 days, present your out-of-state title and buy your tag from your county Tax Collector. If the car has after-market tint, have it inspected and put the decal on the lower left corner of the windshield.
