On the interstate the right lane is for through travel and the left lane is for passing. Tailgating is a main reason for interstate collisions, so leave room, check your blind spots before you move, and know what to do if you break down.

Know the rule

Use the proper lane: the right lane is for through travel, the left lane for passing. On the interstate, passing on either the right or left is permissible. Stay in the right lane if you're slower than other traffic.

Handbook p. 70 ↗

Know the rule

When being passed, don't speed up. When passing, don't drive alongside any vehicle longer than it takes to pass; driving in another vehicle's blind spot is dangerous.

Handbook p. 70 ↗

Know the rule

In the right lane, watch for vehicles entering from access ramps and acceleration lanes, and merge left when it's safe to let them in.

Handbook p. 70 ↗

Changing lanes:

  • Check your rearview and side mirrors
  • Check your blind spot for vehicles beside and behind you
  • Signal your intentions clearly
  • Move over when you're sure it's safe (same steps to return)
  • Switch off your turn signal afterward

Interstate following distance

Interstate following distance
Your speedStay at least
50 mph5 car lengths behind
70 mph7 car lengths behind
Handbook p. 70 ↗

Know the rule

All speed limits are for ideal road and weather conditions, so adjust to circumstances. Be mindful of the posted minimum speed limit.

Handbook p. 70 ↗

Accident or breakdown on the interstate:

  • Move off the pavement onto the extreme right shoulder, or as far right as practical
  • At night, leave your lights on and use your emergency flashers
  • Turn on your emergency flashers to show you need help
  • Never get out into traffic, stand beside the car, walk along or across the interstate, or hitchhike
  • Stay inside, lock the doors and wait for reliable help
Handbook p. 70 ↗

Know the rule

A blind spot exists immediately behind large tractor-trailer rigs. If you can't see the side mirrors on a large truck, the driver can't see you.

Handbook p. 70 ↗

Put it into practice

Your car sputters to a stop on I-55. Get onto the extreme right shoulder, turn on your flashers, and stay inside with the doors locked until reliable help arrives. Don't walk along the interstate looking for a gas station.
