Interstate traffic moves fast, so ramps and extra lanes let you speed up or slow down out of its way. Merge at the speed of traffic, get in position for your exit early, and never try to fix a mistake on a ramp.

Know the rule

To enter, drive along the ramp and obey the posted ramp speed. At the end of the ramp, speed up in the acceleration lane until you match interstate traffic. Merging slower or faster than the flow of traffic is dangerous.

Handbook p. 69 ↗

Know the rule

To merge, yield to approaching vehicles and never turn suddenly into the main flow. Give the proper signal, merge slowly into traffic, then switch off your signal.

Be in the correct lane at least this far before your exit

Handbook p. 69 ↗

Know the rule

Most exits are on the right and require exiting from the right-hand lane, but some are on the left and require the left-hand lane. Watch the signs.

Handbook p. 69 ↗

Know the rule

To exit, check for vehicles beside and behind you, signal, and move into the deceleration lane. Don't slow down until you're in it; then reduce speed to the posted limit and turn off your signal.

Handbook p. 69 ↗
Highway deceleration lane
Exiting: move into the deceleration lane before slowing

Know the rule

If you miss your exit, don't stop and back up; continue to the next exit. If you take the wrong exit, continue off the ramp. Never stop, back up or turn around on an exit ramp.

Handbook p. 69 ↗
Interchange types (directional, cloverleaf, diamond, trumpet)
The four principal interchange types: directional, cloverleaf, diamond and trumpet

Know the rule

Ramps and exits are normally marked clearly. If you're unsure how to enter the interstate, pull off the road and stop to check the correct route; don't proceed until you're sure how to use the ramp.

Handbook p. 71 ↗

Put it into practice

You're in the left lane when a sign shows your exit 1 mile ahead on the right. Start working right now so you're in the right lane at least a quarter mile before the exit, and slow down only after you're in the deceleration lane.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

Before merging onto interstate traffic from the acceleration lane, what should you do with your speed?
  1. Come to a full stop and wait for a gap
  2. Keep it well below the interstate traffic speed
  3. Match the ramp's posted speed only
  4. Increase it to match the speed of interstate traffic

Answer: Increase it to match the speed of interstate traffic

You should increase your speed in the acceleration lane until you match the flow of interstate traffic.

Handbook p. 69 ↗
How far before your exit should you be in the correct lane on the interstate?
  1. At least two miles
  2. At least one mile
  3. At least 100 feet
  4. At least one-quarter mile

Answer: At least one-quarter mile

You should be in the correct lane at least one-quarter mile before your exit.

Handbook p. 69 ↗
If you accidentally miss your intended interstate exit, what should you do?
  1. Continue to the next exit
  2. Stop and back up to the exit
  3. Make a U-turn on the ramp
  4. Pull onto the shoulder and wait for help

Answer: Continue to the next exit

If you miss your exit, you must continue on to the next exit rather than stopping or backing up.

Handbook p. 69 ↗
What should you do if you are unsure how to correctly use an interstate on-ramp?
  1. Follow whichever vehicle is nearest
  2. Guess and merge as best you can
  3. Proceed slowly in the breakdown lane
  4. Pull off the road and stop to check the correct route before proceeding

Answer: Pull off the road and stop to check the correct route before proceeding

If unsure how to enter the interstate, pull off the road and stop to check the correct route before proceeding.

Handbook p. 71 ↗
When exiting the interstate, what should you do before slowing down?
  1. Speed up to reach the exit faster
  2. Move safely into the deceleration lane first
  3. Immediately hit the brakes in the travel lane
  4. Turn off your turn signal

Answer: Move safely into the deceleration lane first

You should not slow down until you have safely moved into the deceleration lane.

Handbook p. 69 ↗
It is acceptable to stop briefly on an exit ramp if you are unsure which way to go.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False
