A suspension or revocation doesn't always mean no driving at all. A limited license may let you drive for essential purposes, while cancellation means you have no legal right to the license you hold.

Limited license

A restricted license some drivers with a revoked or suspended license may get after meeting requirements, including any mandatory waiting period.

Handbook p. 93 ↗

A limited license only allows:

  • Travel to and from work
  • Travel to and from chemical dependency treatment or counseling
  • Transporting dependent children and household dependents for medical, educational or nutritional needs
  • Travel to and from a post-secondary school where you're enrolled
Handbook p. 93 ↗

Cancellation

Your license may be canceled when you don't have a legal right to the license issued to you.

Handbook p. 93 ↗

Your license may be canceled if you:

  • Acquire a mental or physical disability that makes you unable to drive safely
  • Fail a test DPS legally requests to check your ability to drive safely
  • Give false or misleading information on your license application
  • Commit a crime for which cancellation is a legal punishment
  • Don't qualify for a license under Minnesota law
Handbook p. 93 ↗
60 days

Know the rule

Drivers whose licenses are canceled and whose privileges are denied as "inimical to public safety" must use the Ignition Interlock Device Program for three to six years to regain full driving privileges.

Handbook p. 98 ↗

Know the rule

Commercial drivers can be disqualified — lose their CDL privileges — for certain offenses; see the Minnesota Commercial Driver's License Manual.

Handbook p. 93 ↗

Put it into practice

After a DWI revocation and the required waiting period, a driver gets a limited license. She may drive to work and to counseling, and take her son to the doctor — but not to a friend's party.
