A 3-minute lesson from the Iowa course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Before Iowa issues a license, it checks your eyes, your knowledge, and—if you're under 18—your driver's education. Once you're licensed, you carry proof of your license, registration, and insurance every time you drive.
Know the rule
You should always have your license or permit with you while driving.
You can visit any Iowa DOT Service Center or County Treasurer's Office driver's license location—it doesn't have to be the one closest to where you live.
Some services, such as license renewal, are available online if you are age 18 or older and meet other requirements. www.mymvd.iowadot.gov is the ONLY place to renew your license online.
You're 17 and finished an Iowa-approved driver's education course. You still complete the vision screening and pass the knowledge test, but finishing driver's ed satisfies the driving-test requirement.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
