Plan turns ahead: decide where you want to be when you finish, slow down, and watch for pedestrians and vehicles. Avoid last-minute sharp turns, and don't cut corners or swing wide—those raise your crash risk.

Know the rule

Use your turn signal before you change lanes, turn right or left, merge into traffic, or park. Signal every time, even when you see no one—someone may be in your blind spot.

Signal timing:

  • As a rule of thumb, signal before slowing down
  • Don't signal too early—if streets or driveways lie before your turn, pass them first
  • If a vehicle is about to enter between you and your turn, pass it before signaling
  • Make sure the signal is off after the turn
Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Signaling too early can make another driver think you're turning where they are, and pull into your path.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Right on red: allowed unless a NO TURN ON RED sign is posted. Come to a complete stop and yield to all other traffic first.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Left on red: allowed only when turning from the left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street—after a complete stop.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Make U-turns only where they are not prohibited and it is safe.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Three-point turns are generally not safe and increase your exposure to collisions—proceed to the nearest intersection instead.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Put it into practice

On a 55 mph highway you're turning into a farm lane. Start signaling at least 300 feet ahead—but if a driveway sits between you and your turn, wait until you've passed it.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

The speed limit is 55 mph. How far before your turn must you signal?
  1. At least 100 feet
  2. At least 50 feet
  3. At least 500 feet
  4. At least 300 feet

Answer: At least 300 feet

If the speed limit is faster than 45 mph, you must signal at least 300 feet before turning.

Handbook p. 43 ↗
When is a left turn on red permitted in Iowa?
  1. Left lane, one-way onto one-way
  2. From any lane onto any street
  3. Only in rural areas with no traffic
  4. Never under any circumstances

Answer: Left lane, one-way onto one-way

A left turn on red is allowed only from the left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street.

Handbook p. 43 ↗
Why should you wait to signal a turn if a driveway sits between you and your turn?
  1. Iowa bans signaling more than 300 feet early
  2. It can pull another driver into your path
  3. It makes drivers behind you tailgate
  4. Iowa law requires signaling exactly at the turn

Answer: It can pull another driver into your path

If you signal too early, a driver at that driveway may think you're turning there and pull into your path.

Handbook p. 43 ↗
The posted speed limit is exactly 45 mph. How far before your turn must you signal?
  1. At least 300 feet
  2. At least 100 feet
  3. At least 200 feet
  4. At least 500 feet

Answer: At least 100 feet

Iowa law requires signaling at least 100 feet before a turn when the limit is 45 mph or less; 300 feet applies only above 45 mph.

Handbook p. 43 ↗
If the speed limit is 45 mph or less, Iowa law requires you to signal at least 300 feet before turning.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False

False. At 45 mph or less you must signal at least 100 feet before a turn; the 300-foot requirement applies when the speed limit is faster than 45 mph.

Handbook p. 43 ↗
A left turn on red is permitted from any lane onto any street in Iowa.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False

A left turn on red is allowed only from the left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street.
