A learner's permit lets you practice driving before you apply for a license. You can apply at any BMV branch. What you need depends on whether you are 16 yet.

Age 16 or older: to get a permit you must

  • Present Appendix A documents proving identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and Indiana residency
  • Pass a standard vision screening
  • Pass a knowledge exam
Handbook p. 8 ↗

Under 16: to get a permit you must

  • Be at least 15 years old
  • Show a Certificate of Driver Education Enrollment from a BMV-licensed behind-the-wheel training provider
  • Present documents proving identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and Indiana residency
  • Pass a standard vision screening and a knowledge exam
Handbook p. 8 ↗

Handbook p. 9 ↗

Everyone takes a vision screening, and that includes renewals. The only exception is someone eligible to renew online.

Know the rule

All learner's permit and driver's license applicants must pass a vision screening, even when renewing, unless eligible for online renewal.

Handbook p. 9 ↗

Know the rule

If you normally wear glasses or contacts to drive, tell the branch staff and wear them for the screening.

Handbook p. 9 ↗

Know the rule

If you can't pass the screening you may need more evaluation. Even with a doctor's letter, Driver Ability may require more testing, and your credential may not be released that day.

Handbook p. 9 ↗

Put it into practice

You're 15 and your driver ed class starts in two weeks. Bring the school's Certificate of Driver Education Enrollment, not your online theory certificate, plus your identity, lawful status, SSN, and residency documents. Expect a vision screening and a knowledge exam.
