Keep the Secretary of State's records current. Name and address changes have short deadlines, lying on an application is a crime, and some medical conditions must be reported.

30 days

Deadline to apply for a corrected license/ID after a legal name change

Handbook p. 9 ↗
10 days

Deadline to report an address change after you move

Handbook p. 9 ↗

Report an address change by:

  • Visiting a DMV
  • Using ilsos.gov online services
  • Writing to SOS Driver Services, Address Change, 2701 S. Dirksen Pkwy., Springfield, IL 62723
Handbook p. 9 ↗

Know the rule

You will not get a card showing the new address unless you visit a facility, present acceptable residency documents (including a valid mailing address), and pay the fee.

Handbook p. 9 ↗

Duplicate or corrected license/ID:

  • Bring proof of written signature
  • Bring proof of residency if the new address will appear on the card
  • Apply for a duplicate online if your address, name and date of birth are unchanged
  • Changes to name, date of birth, SSN or gender need ID linking old and new information
Handbook p. 10 ↗

Know the rule

If your license was stolen and you're under age 60, a police report stating it was stolen gets you a duplicate at no cost. People over age 60 don't need a police report for a free duplicate.

Handbook p. 10 ↗

  • Knowingly letting someone use your ID documents to apply in your name
