Your license and record must stay accurate. Tell ITD when you move, update your name properly, and renew on time. Letting a license lapse too long turns you back into a new applicant.
Know the rule
To change the name on your license or ID, apply for a duplicate or change it at renewal, with legal proof such as a certified marriage certificate, court-certified divorce decree, or court documents. Update the Social Security Administration first.
Handbook p. 29 ↗Deadline to notify ITD when your address changes
Handbook p. 29 ↗Know the rule
Notify ITD with a change of address form at a county office, online at itd.idaho.gov, or in writing by email or mail. To show the new address on the card itself, get a duplicate (unless you can renew).
Handbook p. 29 ↗Know the rule
Your record must show your physical address; a P.O. box, general delivery, HC route, rural route, or other address may be your mailing address.
Handbook p. 29 ↗For your own protection, DO NOT:
- Lend anyone your license, permit, or ID card
- Use anyone else's license, permit, or ID card
- Display or possess a fraudulent or altered license, permit, or ID card
- Keep a license, permit, or ID card that has been canceled
- Let an unlicensed driver drive your vehicle
Know the rule
At 21 or older you may renew a Class D or CDL in person up to 25 months before it expires, unless your CDL has a hazardous materials endorsement.
Handbook p. 30 ↗Know the rule
Renewals last four or eight years, or to the end of your lawful stay in the U.S. Drivers aged 21 to 62 may choose the eight-year renewal.
Handbook p. 30 ↗Know the rule
Vision screening is required at every renewal; if you fail, the examiner may require a Vision Exam form from an eye doctor. Medical forms may also be required.
Handbook p. 30 ↗Know the rule
An Idaho license (Class D or CDL), or an out-of-state Class D, expired 25 months or more means taking all applicable knowledge and skills tests.
Handbook p. 30 ↗Know the rule
An out-of-state CDL expired more than 12 months: to keep CDL privileges, take the Class D knowledge and skills tests, all CDL knowledge tests, and a skills test in the matching vehicle class.
Handbook p. 30 ↗Know the rule
Lost, damaged, or destroyed credential: get a duplicate at any county office or online (paper application if temporarily out of state). If you later find the old one, destroy it or surrender it; keep the duplicate.
Handbook p. 30 ↗Extensions (license expires on your birthday)
| Situation | What you can get |
|---|---|
| Temporarily out of state | Up to 12 months, $10.00 |
| Still away | A second and final 12 months, $10.00 |
| Active-duty military or dependent | As many as needed, $10.00 each |
| CDL with hazmat endorsement | CDL may be extended; hazmat cannot |
Know the rule
If your license, DT/SIP, CLP, or ID card is lost, stolen, mutilated, destroyed, or confiscated, visit a county DMV office and declare the reason for the duplicate.
Handbook p. 31 ↗Put it into practice
You're 35 and your Class D expires next month while you're on a year-long work assignment in another state. Apply for a 12-month extension for $10.00; if needed, you can request one more, final 12-month extension.
