The paperwork for registering depends on where and how you got the vehicle: new or used, in Hawaii, another state or abroad. Out-of-state vehicles can drive on a temporary permit for a limited time.
Ownership documents Hawaii accepts
| Purchase | Bring |
|---|---|
| New, in Hawaii | Application countersigned by the licensed new car dealer |
| New, another state | Maker's certificate of origin or notarized bill of sale |
| New, foreign country | Foreign dealer's bill of sale in your name |
| Used, foreign country | Certificate of registration and bill of sale |
| Used, title state | Title, registration, notarized bill of sale |
| Used, non-title state | Registration + two notarized bills of sale |
Know the rule
A vehicle bought new in a foreign country must have the manufacturer's label showing compliance with USA standards and a 17-character VIN.

Handbook p. 23 ↗Put it into practice
You ship your car from California, still registered there in your name. With your registration, shipping receipt and a current Hawaii safety inspection, you can get a temporary permit, but never for more than 12 months. Then register it with your county.
