Parking in the wrong place blocks traffic, hides pedestrians and keeps emergency crews from working. Georgia lists places where you may never stop, and places where you may stop only for a moment to pick up or drop off passengers.

Know the rule

Parking on a highway is against the law. If your vehicle is disabled, make every practical effort to get it off the highway, leaving free passage and a clear view of it for 200 feet in each direction.

Never stop, stand or park:

  • On the street side of any parked vehicle
  • On a sidewalk, within an intersection, or on a crosswalk
  • Between a safety zone and the adjacent curb
  • Next to or opposite street work or an obstruction, if you'd block traffic
  • On a bridge or overpass, or within a highway tunnel
  • On any railroad tracks
  • On a controlled access roadway
  • Between roadways on a divided highway, including crossovers
  • Anywhere a no-parking sign is posted

Know the rule

The same momentary-stop rule applies anywhere official signs prohibit standing.

Put it into practice

You pull up 10 feet from a fire hydrant to let a friend out. That's allowed only for the moment it takes to drop them off; you can't wait or park there.
