Highway work zones
A 3-minute lesson from the Georgia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Georgia DOT does most road work without closing roads, so you'll often drive right past crews. Orange signs mean road work. Flaggers have the authority of a sign, and you must yield to work vehicles with amber lights.
Highway work zone
Part of a road where construction, reconstruction or maintenance is done on the road, shoulders or nearby areas, including mobile work like utility work, snow removal and surveying.
The speed limit in most work zones is reduced. If it isn't, obey the normal posted limit but take extra care with road conditions, lane position and workers.
Black-and-orange advisory speed signs, always used with warning signs, show safe speeds. Official speed limit reductions use standard black-and-white speed limit signs.
Work vehicles and heavy equipment usually have flashing or revolving amber lights. Yield to them, and slow down as you approach any work zone where they're displayed.
Mobile work vehicles (pavement repair, debris removal, paint striping, utility work, snow removal) often move about 5 mph and may stop in the road. Slow down, yield and follow their directions.
You pass an orange ROAD WORK AHEAD sign, and then a flagger signals you to stop. Stop. In a work zone, a flagger's direction carries the same authority as a regulatory sign.
