A 3-minute lesson from the Delaware course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
No-parking rules keep sightlines, fire access and traffic flow clear. The distances are favorite test questions, and the rules apply even with someone in the car—unless a sign allows it, police direct you, or you're avoiding a crash.
Also don't stop alongside or opposite road excavations or obstructions when traffic would be impeded, or anywhere stopping would block the free flow of traffic.
Never park on the paved or traveled part of a highway outside a business or residence area unless your vehicle is disabled and can't be moved. Pull off to the right as far as possible.
If you park on a shoulder from sunset to sunrise, or when you can't see people or objects 1,000 feet away, turn on your parking lights (or four-way flashers). Don't flash the turn signal on one side only.
You pull over to drop off a friend 25 feet from a stop sign, staying in the driver's seat. That's still illegal—you must be at least 30 feet from a stop sign, even for a brief stop.
