Delaware relies on drivers to report health changes that could affect their driving. Some conditions require a yearly medical report, and family members, police or doctors can ask DMV to re-examine a driver.

Know the rule

Your vision is screened to see if you can drive safely. If you need glasses or contacts, your license is marked and you can't legally drive without them. CDL vision rules are federal.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

Know the rule

When applying for or renewing a license, you must self-declare any medical condition that may interfere with safe driving, and you may need a favorable report from a licensed practitioner.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Know the rule

A person subject to loss of consciousness, or with another condition that may impair driving, gets a license only with a medical report (form MV-346) stating the condition is under sufficient control.

Handbook p. 43 ↗
Yearly

New medical report due by the last day of your birthday month, when required

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Re-examination (Title 21, Section 2714): immediate family, law enforcement or a licensed practitioner may request it. To keep driving, the person must provide favorable medical reports and pass the eye, knowledge and driving skills exams, and possibly a driver rehabilitation evaluation.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Know the rule

As of August 2024, DMV no longer requires mandatory medical reporting; licensed practitioners are encouraged to report patients who may be dangerous drivers.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Medical surrender: you may voluntarily surrender your license if you can't get a favorable report. There's no reinstatement fee if you surrender before the suspension date; after more than one year, extra testing is required.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Put it into practice

A driver with epilepsy must file a yearly medical report, and his birthday is in May. His favorable report must reach DMV by May 31, or his license will be suspended and he'll owe a $50 reinstatement fee.
