If you're under 18, Colorado phases in your driving privileges. An adult must accept legal responsibility for you, you must log practice hours, and your first year of licensed driving comes with passenger limits and a curfew.

Know the rule

Under 18, your application needs an Affidavit of Liability (DR2460), signed in front of a driver license office employee or a notary public.

Handbook p. 5 ↗

Who may sign the Affidavit of Liability:

  • Parent or stepparent
  • Grandparent with power of attorney
  • Legal guardian
  • Spouse older than 18
  • Any other responsible adult willing to accept legal liability
Handbook p. 5 ↗

Know the rule

The signer takes legal responsibility for your driving. If they withdraw their signature, your permit/license is canceled. Minors in foster care are exempt if certain conditions are met.

50 hours

Handbook p. 5 ↗

Know the rule

If you are younger than 16 and 6 months, you must also complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driver education instructor.

Handbook p. 5 ↗

Know the rule

If no approved school within 30 miles offers at least 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training per week, 12 extra hours with your parent/guardian/alternate supervisor may replace the 6 hours.

Handbook p. 5 ↗

Know the rule

If you live more than 30 miles from the nearest commercial driving school, bring a printed map of the route from home to that school to the license office.

Know the rule

Siblings and passengers with medical emergencies are exceptions to the passenger limits.

Handbook p. 5 ↗

Know the rule

Curfew: during your first year licensed, no driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by an instructor, parent or legal guardian.

Handbook p. 5 ↗

Curfew exceptions:

  • Driving to and from school or work (with a signed statement from the school or employer)
  • Medical emergencies
  • Emancipated minors
Handbook p. 5 ↗

Put it into practice

You're 17 and got your license 8 months ago. You may drive one friend under 21 to practice at 7 p.m. But driving home from a party at 12:30 a.m. breaks the curfew, since you're still in your first year.
