Changing lanes includes moving from one lane to another, passing, merging from an entrance ramp and pulling out from the curb or shoulder. Every time, check ahead, beside and behind, including your blind spots.

Blind spot

An area slightly to the side and rear of your vehicle that you can't see in your rearview or side mirrors.

To change lanes:

  • Turn on your signal: at least 3 seconds or 200 feet before leaving your lane
  • Check traffic ahead
  • Use your mirrors to check traffic behind
  • Look over your shoulder to check your blind spot
  • When safe, move into the new lane
  • Once centered, check the mirror for traffic behind you

Know the rule

You must yield to vehicles already in the lane you want to enter. Don't change lanes if another vehicle must slow down for you.

Handbook p. 14 ↗

Know the rule

Before changing lanes, backing up or turning, check your path and blind spots for bicyclists.

Handbook p. 26 ↗

Put it into practice

Your mirrors look clear for a move to the left lane. Before steering, glance over your left shoulder: a small car may be sitting in your blind spot. Only move over once that check is clear too.
