Tire problems and neglected maintenance cause crashes, especially among new drivers. A few quick checks at least once a month keep your car safe and save money.

2/32 inch

Minimum tire tread depth

Handbook p. 87 ↗

Know the rule

Penny test: put a penny, Lincoln's head first, into the deepest-looking tread groove. If you can see all of his head, your tires are too worn. Don't drive on them; replace them.

Handbook p. 89 ↗

At least once a month, check:

  • Tire tread, with the penny test
  • Tire pressure: compare a gauge reading (tires cold) with the PSI on the door-jamb sticker
  • Brake lights: have someone stand behind the car while you press the brake; both must light
  • Windshield wipers: replace yearly in sunny/hot or cold regions, twice a year in dusty or dry ones
  • Fluids: oil level on the dipstick, and coolant up to the "minimum" line
Handbook p. 89 ↗

Know the rule

If the oil film doesn't reach the dipstick markings, add oil. If coolant is below the minimum fill line, add the coolant/water mix your manual specifies.

Handbook p. 90 ↗

Know the rule

Never open the radiator cap on a hot car. Wait until it cools down.

Handbook p. 90 ↗

Know the rule

Proper tire pressure is safer, extends tire life, and can give up to a 3% fuel benefit per tank. Rotating tires can add up to 10,000 miles of tire life.

Handbook p. 87 ↗

Know the rule

Make sure your tires are safe for high-speed driving; blowouts are a common factor in crashes.

Handbook p. 68 ↗

Put it into practice

You slide a penny into your tread and can see the top of Lincoln's head. Your tread is under 2/32 inch. The tires are worn out and need replacing before you drive in rain or snow.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

What is the minimum tire tread depth, according to the handbook?
  1. 4/32 inch
  2. 1/32 inch
  3. 6/32 inch
  4. 2/32 inch

Answer: 2/32 inch

Tires must have at least 2/32 inch of tread depth.

Handbook p. 87 ↗
In the penny test, what does it mean if you can see all of Lincoln's head?
  1. Your tires are too worn and need replacing
  2. Your tread depth is safe
  3. Your tires are overinflated
  4. Your tires need rotating

Answer: Your tires are too worn and need replacing

If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tires are too worn; replace them.

Handbook p. 89 ↗
You should wait until a hot car has cooled down before opening the radiator cap.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

Never open the radiator cap on a hot car; wait until it cools down first.
