Driving is a privilege, not a right. Once you're licensed, a handful of rules decide who can be licensed, what you must do with the card, and when an under-21 license runs out.

License basics:

  • A license may be issued only to an applicant at least 16 years of age
  • You must have the license in your possession whenever you drive
  • You must sign your license for it to be valid
  • Separate tests are required to operate a motorcycle, motor scooter, or moped
  • Social Security Numbers are mandatory for all permits and licenses
