Vermont driving lesson · Keeping Your License Valid
Renewals & replacements
A 3-minute lesson from the Vermont course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
A license doesn't last forever. Vermont mails you a reminder before it expires, but keeping it valid is your job. Two expiration deadlines matter: after 14 days you can't drive on it, and after 3 years you must test again.
Know the rule
About a month before your license or permit expires, a renewal application is mailed to the address in DMV files. Answer all the questions, sign it, and return it with the fees. The DMV mails you the updated license or permit.
If no renewal form arrives, get one at a DMV office or online at dmv.vermont.gov. Mail it with the fees to the DMV, 120 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05603-0001, or visit an office.
Your license expired 20 days ago because the renewal letter got lost. You may not drive until you renew, since it has been expired more than 14 days. Get a renewal application online or at an office. You don't need to retest, because it hasn't been 3 years.
