Registration and liability insurance
A 4-minute lesson from the Oklahoma course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Any car you drive must have a current license tag, registration and title, and every Oklahoma driver or owner must carry liability insurance. "Liability" means you are legally and financially responsible for the harm you or your vehicle cause in a collision, so the state checks for proof at traffic stops and crashes.
Know the rule
Registering at a designated Service Oklahoma location or SOK licensed operator means you've paid the required taxes and fees; you get a new tag or a current-year sticker for your present tag.
When you buy or sell a vehicle, transfer the title at a designated Service Oklahoma location or SOK licensed operator to show proper ownership. Registration and title fees depend on the vehicle's age, type and value.
At a collision or traffic stop, the driver must show a current security verification form (proof of liability insurance) to the officer. It comes from the vehicle owner's insurance company or the driver's own nonowner policy.
In a collision you must show your proof of insurance to the other driver and others involved. Write down the other driver's insurance information, full name, license number and date of birth for driver and owner.
Failing to comply with the Compulsory Insurance Law or to show proof on request: fine up to $250, 30 days in jail or both, plus suspension of license and registration
Creating, manufacturing or counterfeiting a security verification form may be a felony. Simply possessing a fake one is a misdemeanor: fine up to $250 and mandatory suspension of your driving privilege and registration.
You borrow your cousin's car for the weekend. Check the glove box for a current insurance verification form first: you can be arrested and have your driving privileges suspended for driving it uninsured, no matter who owns it.
