Idaho issues driver's licenses, learner permits, and ID cards. Most new drivers start on a permit that only lets them drive with the right person beside them. Know which permit fits your age and what each one allows.
Types of Idaho credentials:
- Driver's licenses: Commercial (CDL) Class A, B, and C; Class D non-commercial
- Permits: Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), Class D Instruction Permit (IP)
- Permits: Driver Training Permit (DT), Motorcycle Instruction Permit (MIP)
- Identification Cards (ID)

For applicants 17 or older: lets you practice driving for one (1) year while accompanied by an adult 18 or older who holds a valid driver's license.

You must pass a knowledge test to get an IP. It may be renewed one time without retesting if your last knowledge test was within the past 12 months.
Handbook p. 16 ↗Know the rule
Anyone 17 or older may take driver's training with a Driver Training or Supervised Instruction Permit (after a driver's education course) or with a Class D Instruction Permit.
Handbook p. 16 ↗Motorcycle Instruction Permit (MIP)
A permit for learning to ride. You must have a valid Idaho driver's license and pass a motorcycle knowledge test. It may be renewed once without retesting if that test was within the past 12 months.
Handbook p. 18 ↗Know the rule
Anyone under 21 applying for an MIP must take a knowledge test and complete an approved Motorcycle Rider Training Course.
Handbook p. 18 ↗Put it into practice
You're 17 and never took driver's ed. You can pass the knowledge test, get a Class D Instruction Permit, and practice for one year with your 19-year-old licensed cousin in the car, because your supervisor only has to be 18 or older with a valid license.
