Fatal crashes are more likely at night, so 16- and 17-year-old drivers have a curfew. A few other limits apply to every permit holder and teen driver: seatbelts, vehicle type, phones and motorcycle passengers.
11 p.m. – 5 a.m.
Curfew hours when 16- and 17-year-old licensed drivers may not drive
Curfew and passenger limits also don't apply to active members of a volunteer fire company, volunteer ambulance service or EMS organization responding to or returning from an emergency call, or carrying out their duties.
A 16- or 17-year-old caught using a phone while driving is charged with a moving violation, and a conviction under age 18 results in a license suspension.
You're 17 and finish your shift at a restaurant at 11:30 p.m. You may drive home, because travel for employment is a curfew exception. Driving to a friend's house at midnight is not allowed.
