Points match how likely a violation is to cause a crash. The most dangerous offenses carry 10 points, nearly the whole 12-point limit in one conviction.
10 points: Driving while your privilege is suspended or revoked, or violating a limited license Driving while intoxicated / under the influence Reckless driving Refusal to provide a breath sample Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer Speed contest (racing) Negligent homicide, manslaughter, or assault with a motor vehicle Handbook p. 16 ↗ 6 points: Negligent driving Failure to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle Failure to stop for a school bus while it is loading or unloading Disobeying traffic control devices in a school zone, playground, crosswalk, or park Driving without insurance Minor operating after consuming alcohol Handbook p. 16 ↗ 4 points: Careless driving types of behavior Following too close Failure to stop or yield Illegal passing in a Traffic Safety Corridor Handbook p. 16 ↗ 3 points Violating the hours-of-operation restrictions of an oversize or overweight permit
Handbook p. 16 ↗ Know the rule
Violating the speed restrictions of an oversize or overweight permit uses the same scale: 3-9 mph over = 2, 10-19 = 4, 20 or more = 6.
Handbook p. 16 ↗ Put it into practice
You're caught going 52 in a posted 40 zone: 12 over, so 4 points. The same speeding in a school zone or playground crosswalk would be 6 points.
A useful reminder Leaving the scene is 9, not 10. It's the only 9-point violation, which makes it a favorite test question.
